Cathy Befi, Music Therapist Assistant


Cathy is currently finishing her basic music courses at Austin Community College, and is transferring to the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio in the fall to begin her music therapy education. She has been in Austin for twelve years, and holds a BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Cathy directs a church choir and sings in a vocal jazz ensemble, and after three years as a computer programmer, has decided to make the career switch to Music Therapy, where she finds joy in helping people and sharing the healing power of music.

Julian Cooney, Intern


Julian is currently an undergraduate psychology student in his last year at St. Edward's University. He found the Center for Music Therapy through his university's internship program. Julian helps out around the center and sits in on therapy sessions with many clients. He has found the experiences and relationships to be both very rewarding and enlightening.

Meredith Hamons, MT-BC


Originally from Ohio, Meredith received her degree in music therapy from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Meredith and her husband, Chris, moved to Texas in July of 2007 and she completed her internship at the San Antonio State Hospital. Meredith has studied classical piano for most of her life and also enjoys playing guitar. In addition to music, Meredith enjoys traveling and the beach.

Claire Hayenga, Administration


Claire Hayenga graduated from the University of Texas with her BA in Psychology. Claire has enjoyed the past five years living in Austin. She began playing the violin at an early age, and hopes to blend this passion for music with her Psychology studies in the near future.

Hope Young, MT-BC


Hope Young is the Founder and President of The Center for Music Therapy, Inc. in Austin, Texas. She graduated from The University of The Pacific's Conservatory of Music in May of 1989 were she worked as a student music therapist throughout her degree training. Hope immediately began her career as a Music Therapist working full time at Monteville Hospital in Morgan Hill, CA working with adolescent and adults in a short term-acute psychiatric and sub-stance abuse treatment program. In 1990 Hope moved to Austin, Texas she grew her company through the 1990's to 21 full time music therapist, plus multiple contract and part-time MT's on staff servicing Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christ, Houston, Dallas and many surrounding rural areas throughout Texas. Hope has provided services for thousands of people and supervised the care of thousands more over her 20 years of practice throughout Texas.
